Lerhin Castle, Lerhin, County Galway: a ruined castle in rolling Galway pasture, recorded as belonging to a Burke branch and built by Nuala na meadoige Ny Fionachtaigh, a name that sounds like it belongs to someone who drank. What remains is a low rubble mound, nine by eight metres, with part of a larger bawn wall still standing, while photographs from 1969 show two storeys and window openings that have since collapsed. The wider earthworks suggest a working estate as much as a fortress, where Burke life may have moved between defence, fields and ordinary domestic noise.
