Knockatoura Fort

Knockatoura Fort is a large early medieval rath in County Galway, measuring eighty-four metres across, though quarrying and field boundaries have cut away much of its eastern circuit. The remaining earth and stone banks trace only a portion of the original enclosure, revealing how practical farming gradually absorbed the monument into the working landscape. What is left still suggests a substantial settled place, even if the rest has been lost to the demands of the land.
