Gallen’s mound hid a medieval church until excavation in the late 1930s exposed its wall footings. Before that dig, the mound may have marked a familiar local landmark, perhaps guiding worship, memory or passage through the county. Its burial suggests people lived around a place they did not fully understand, trusting shape and story when structure remained invisible.

The wall footings of a medieval church (OF014-029008-) was discovered during an excavation carried out in the late 1930's (Kendrick 1939, 1-20). This church was the site of mound prior to excavation. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
