G. Yd.

Graveyard

What is recorded here

G. Yd. is a living graveyard beside a late-medieval church in Newtownforbes, County Longford. Its irregular stone boundary faces the main street, admits visitors through an eastern gate, and holds memorials from the 17th century to the present day. Some names have blurred while others remain sharp, suggesting that the place has kept company with the village for generations.
Associated with a late-medieval church (LF008-035----). This large irregularly shaped graveyard (85m E-W; 50m N-S) is enclosed by a stone wall topped with iron railings on the E side, facing onto the main street of Newtownforbes village. Access is via a gate in the E wall. Memorials mainly date from the 19th and 20th centuries but some inscriptions are illegible. The graveyard is still in use. A 17th-century headstone (LF008-035002-) lies to the S of the church. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 5 June 2013
