Fulacht fia in Tooreen East

Situated in coniferous forest, on the SE-facing slope of a SW-NE valley with a SW-NE mountain stream c. 90m to the SE. There is local information about a 'large' fulacht fiadh extant in the 1930s (NMI file), but the area was subsequently forested. It was re-discovered in by Coillte managers, E. Drohan and T. O'Donoghue, and archaeologist E. Byrnes. It is a horshoe-shaped mound (dims. 13.9m E-W; 9m N-S; H 0.35m at W to 1m, at E) with a water-filled trough area (dims. 5m NNW-SSE; 4m ENE-WSW) on the N side. Kerb circle (WA006-024001-) is c. 180m to the N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
