Fulacht fia in Curraheen (cork By., Inishkenny Par.)

Three oval pits filled with heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil and one small deposit of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil were identified during archaeological monitoring in advance of the construction of the N22 Ballincollig Bypass and were excavated in 2002. The deposit (L 0.22m; Wth 0.2m; T 0.09m) was oval in shape. Pit 1 (L 0.91m; Wth 0.59m; D 0.14m) had sloping sides and a flat base. Pit 2 (L 1.43m; Wth 1.2m; D 0.07m) also had sloping sides and a flat base. It was found 0.7m to the SE of pit 1. Pit 3 (L 1m; Wth 0.52m; D 0.17m) had sloping sides and a concave base. It was found c. 3m S of pit 2 and had been partially cut by a field drain. A charcoal sample from the base of pit 1 was dated to the Iron Age (185 cal. BC - AD 85 cal.).
