Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Fawnarevagh

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Fawnarevagh holds two stone rings, one forty-seven metres across and the other fifty metres away, both cut open by later field walls. The larger is a fairy fort in local speech, but its drystone edge and rough grazing setting mark it as a human cashel first. Perhaps families lived there before forgetting, then left the stones for myths to occupy.
In rough grazing land. Poorly preserved circular cashel (diam. c. 47m) defined by a drystone wall. A field wall cuts through the monument at ENE and WSW. Another cashel (GA104-136----) lies c. 50m to the SW. (McCaffrey 1952, 229, no. 114) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 15 December 2017
