Man-made underground passage in Faughart Lower

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Faughart Lower holds a man-made underground passage linked to a ringfort, remembered through local tradition rather than formal discovery. People may have built the passage to hide during storms, keep warm in winter, or move goods without being seen. The earth above may have swallowed the entrance, but the dug shape still contradicts nature. Forgetting the name does not erase the hands that cut the passage or the reason they worked in darkness.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Local tradition of a Man-made underground passage in ringfort (LH004-025001-). (CLAJ 1966,121-2)
