What is recorded here

A shallow sub-oval pit was excavated here in 2003 (Dowd 2005, area 2). Oak charcoal from the primary fill of the pit was dated to between AD 1020 and 1270. The pit contained six pieces of iron slag which appear to represent the residues of iron smelting. Analysis of the slag showed that it contained tap slag which is produced in a shaft furnace indicating that such a furnace was in use nearby.
