Clooneen holds a double-walled cashel where a later outer ring embraced the older inner wall, creating a deep circular chamber above the Clare pasture. The mound rises higher at the north end while collapsed stones cluster along the eastern perimeter, suggesting the hidden entrance that avoided formal description. Two other cashels watch from nearby high ground, forming a small company of stone rooms where people may have lived, hidden or tended the land before the fairy name took the place.

In pastureland on high ground at the S extent of an E-W ravine, within a field system (CL009-059001-), an E-W running roadway lies immediately to the N. Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. Listed as enclosure in the RMP (1996). An almost circular cashel (ext. dims. c. 33m E-W; 32.4m N-S) defined by a drystone wall encloses a flat-topped mound. An outer wall (Wth 1.7m) was subsequently added to the original cashel wall (ext. dims. 28.4m N-S). The outer face of the inner wall is visible from SW to NNE and the outer face of the later wall is visible from S to N and at NNE; where visible sections up to 1m high survive. There is no evidence for an entrance but it may be located in the E where there is a particular concentration of collapsed material along the perimeter. The enclosed mound is eroded at the edges and rises 1.4-1.8m above the external ground level; at N it rises to 3.6m. A cashel (CL016-020022-) is located c. 48m to the SSE and another cashel (CL016-020019-) is located c. 80m to the W. Compiled by: Olive Alcock and Lynda McCormack Date of upload: 19 April 2022
