Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Carrowkilleen

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible wall or ditch remains in the scrubland of Carrowkilleen, yet a curved field boundary still traces the ghost of a twenty-seven metre ring. The fort vanished before human memory, leaving only a faint line on the earth and a warning not to trust what is missing.
In an area of scrubland and outcropping rock. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 27m). No visible surface trace survives. The slightly curving field boundary shown on the 1922 edition of the map at this point at SW may mirror its outline. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 22 July 2019
