Fairy fort / ringfort in Carrowroe (ballymoe By.)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible trace survives in the grassland northwest of Carrowroe House, though a circular enclosure roughly fifty metres across once stood there. Another earthwork lay eighty metres to the south-southeast, suggesting a small cluster of human activity now erased by time and soil. The absence is not emptiness; it is a shape remembered only through measurement and map lines.
In grassland NW of Carrowroe House. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 50m). No visible surface trace survives. Another earthwork (GA006-028----) lay c. 80m to SSE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
