Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Tullig (muskerry West By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human homes, farms and refuge places from the Iron Age and middle ages. People built them, lived beside them, reused them, and stopped using them when life moved on. The fairy name came later. It is a marker for old age and forgotten purpose.
According to Broker (1937, 50) on John Barrett's land is 'fort, 30 feet diameter'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
