Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lissannymore

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne and Ciaran followed the red ribbon to a flat field where no fort was visible. Under the ribbon, a circular ditch appeared, and inside the ditch a child's wooden fort stood complete. The child had died young, but the fort remained because love can shape dead flesh into a house. Marianne touched the wooden wall and felt the child's hands still warm inside it.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 40m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank with a wide, shallow external fosse. Bank identifiable only from NNW-N-NE. From SSW-W-NNW there are slight traces of an internal fosse. The perimeter has been levelled from E-S-SSW. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
