Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Legghimore

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Located in a fold towards the bottom of a S-facing slope. This is depicted as an embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 30m) described as a 'fort' in gothic lettering on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map, but it is not represented on the 1907 edition. No archaeological feature is visible at ground level in pasture, but it can be seen as the parch-mark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) on the OSI aerial images (2005). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 27 July 2017
