Knocknanuss holds a broken earthen ring above the Owenkeagh river, its south bank raised to defend against the slope rather than human enemies. People called it a fairy fort because the field contained no household, no grave marker and no visible human purpose. The name may have protected the place from digging, or it may have admitted that some rooms on earth belong to others.

In pasture, on S facing slope overlooking the Owenkeagh river. Circular area (20m N-S; 23m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.1m); raised on S side to compensate for hillslope. Interior covered by E-W lines of field clearance stones. Surrounding field fences removed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
