Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Killeenbrack

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on rock outcrop, in undulating rough pasture, which has moderate views to N and E and is overlooked by higher ground to SW and W. Ringforts (WM024-103----/105----) lie c. 55m to N and c. 110m to SW, respectively. Monument described in 1971 as a large oval-shaped area (approx. diam. 65m) enclosed by a scarp (H 1.2m) and external fosse with no clear entrance feature visible. The scarp is steep and boulders have been piled up against it from N-E-S-SSW, in relatively recent times. Modern field fences intersect the scarp at N and SSW. There are slight traces of a wide fosse visible at SW only. The interior rises gently from the centre to the perimeter and there are banks and scarps within, but these are largely obscured by impenetrable vegetation. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. Date of upload: 21 August 2019
