Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortmore (connello Upper By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Denis Power recorded the Gortmore ringfort in 2011 as a broken earthen circle hidden beneath tall hay grass. Its shallow bank and narrow ditch suggest people once drew a boundary around their lives before a field drain cut through the eastern edge. The fairies may have taken the rest, leaving only a low ridge for cattle to graze across.
In hay meadow, in level terrain. Circular area (24m N-S; 23m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.5m) with external fosse (D 0.3m; Wth 3.2m). Enclosing element truncated NE->SE by a N-S field boundary which has a deep drain on its W side. Entire site under tall grass. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
