What is recorded here
Three earthen banks and narrow ditches still trace a 56-metre circle at the foot of Bweeng Mountain, with stone fragments visible where the ground has worn thin. The entrance faces east, the centre holds old clearance mounds, and hidden passages cut through the north-west and south-east quadrants. People may have lived, herded or hidden there before the fields took the shape of the banks; the mountain still leans over the place like a witness.
In pasture, on gentle N-facing slope, at base of Bweeng Mountain. Circular area (56m E-W) enclosed by three earthen banks with intervening fosses. Inner bank (H 0.75m) and intervening fosse (D 1.05m) survive all round; ruined stone facing noted on inner face of bank to S. Middle bank (H 0.45m) survives WNW->S; remains of stone-facing on inner face of bank. Second intervening fosse (D 0.1m; Wth at base 3m) and third earthen bank (H 0.55m) survives E->S; substantial earthen stone-faced field boundary which skirts enclosure on SW side may incorporate remains of third bank. Entrance (Wth through inner bank 1.8m; through outer bank 3m) to E. Interior slopes down gently to N; three mounds of field clearance material at centre. Man-made underground passages (CO041-08002-; CO041-08003-) in NW and SE quadrants respectively. Bowman (1934, 544) recorded four mounds in interior, the largest 25ft x 12ft x 2ft H; the smallest 4ft x 3ft x 1ft H.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
