Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dromin (iraghticonnor By., Killehenny Ed)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Dromin in Iraghticonnor Bay held a circular earthen enclosure that vanished when machinery levelled it in 1976. It resisted notice long enough to escape the first survey but reappeared later, suggesting human hands built a boundary strong enough to be remembered, altered and finally erased. The fairy label may be mockery, wonder or a warning about what disappears when people stop seeing it.
This site is not marked on the 1841-42 OS map but appears on the later edition as a circular enclosure. It was levelled in 1976 and no surface trace of it survives today. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 227. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
