Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cornamahan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human, never fairy. This is a ringfort, a rath, a dwelling place with a boundary and a door. The fairies are the fiction people invented later because they refused to believe ordinary humans lived there.
Raised circular area (int. dims. 28m N-S; 26.2m E-W) enclosed by the remains of a substantial earthen bank and a fosse. Original entrance was probably at ESE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
