Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolballyshane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty-four metres of ancient defiance sit atop a gentle rise in Coolballyshane, waiting for human knees to bend beside them. The earth-and-stone bank still stands, though bushes choke its seam and nettles carpet the interior like a green forgot its purpose. A farm track clips the northern fosse, unthinking, while the eastern opening yawns through dumped rubble as if the fort exhaled once and never inhaled again.
In pasture, atop gentle rise in undulating terrain. Circular area (diam. 34m) enclosed by earth-and-stone bank, with external fosse (Wth 1.4m, D 0.55m) ESE->NW. Bank (int. H 1.35m; ext. H 1.85m), best preserved SE->SW, is masked by bushes and trees. Earth and stones have been dumped against external bank face at E, where there is an opening (Wth 2.7m) through dumped material and bank. Level interior is covered with nettles and thistles. Farm passage skirts around enclosure W->NNE, clipping fosse at N. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011 See attached ASI aerial photographs ASIAP – taken on 04/03/2006.
