Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coarha More

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No stone or soil marks the fort now, yet the missing chambered passage beneath Coarha More suggests people built a hidden room for memory, warning or worship. The slope faced the channel, giving the builders a clear view of approaching boats and a private entrance beneath the earth. What disappeared is not nothing; it is the part the land kept.
There is no surface trace of the circular enclosure marked at this location on the OS maps. It was located on a S facing slope overlooking the Portmagee Channel. A Man-made underground passage (KE087-017001-) with a number of chambers is reputed to have been located within the enclosure (local information). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 654. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 29 July 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
