Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Clonbrock Demesne

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible wall or ditch remains on the gentle rise, yet the vanished fort still occupies the land. It likely stood as a circular enclosure nearly forty metres across, large enough to hold a household, herds and the noise of ordinary life. People may have built, argued, loved and forgotten the place before earth and grass erased the boundary. The loss does not diminish it; it completes it.
On a gentle N-facing rise. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 40m). No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
