Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Castletown (kiltartan By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne and I walked the flat circle at dawn, her boots pressing into soil that remembered feet. We called it a fairy fort because people often do when a room has no owner, but I smelled wood smoke and heard a child laughing behind the earth. Marianne laughed with the child. I wanted to laugh with her, yet I was still listening for the person who would return the joy.
On a gentle rise in undulating farmland. Very poorly preserved circular rath (diam. 28.5m) best defined by a low broad rise (Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.35m) at N. Traces of external facing stones are evident in the ESE sector, where traces of a possible fosse are also evident. Traces of a possible Man-made underground passage (GA123-030001-) are evident in the SW quadrant of the interior. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 24 November 2017
