Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrickfin

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on a NW-facing slope, in pasture, with good views to N and W and restricted elsewhere. Monument described in 1978 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 27m) enclosed by a bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The earth and stone inner bank is fairly wide, yet low and is almost reduced to a scarp. The remains of a very shallow and narrow intervening fosse are visible from SW-W-N-NE. There are traces of a low outer bank at S and W. The original entrance is not apparent. The interior has cultivation ridges running NW-SE and there are low, stony outcrops in the N & NW quadrants. A later bank intersects the scarp at N and another at E. Compiled by: Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien Date of upload: 16 July 2019
