Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cappanihane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half-hidden in pasture and undergrowth, the ringfort at Cappanihane still holds its shape: a shallow circle of earth and shadow where the land remembers being shaped. The broken western bank suggests an entrance, perhaps a causeway, but ploughs and time have blurred what hands once made clear. It is the kind of place that does not announce itself; it waits to be noticed, and in that waiting becomes a small chamber for imagination.
In pasture, on slight rise in generally level terrain. Circular area (44m N-S; 40.5m NE-SW) enclosed by eroded earthen bank (int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.8m) with external fosse (D 0.8m; Wth 1.7m). Break in bank at W (Wth 3m) with possible causeway over fosse but this area recently damaged by agricultural activity. Interior slopes gently down from perimeter towards centre. Both interior and enclosing element partially covered by trees and undergrowth. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
