A broad, deep ditch once ringed a raised circular field in Aghaconny, marked by a causeway cutting the eastern bank and a hidden passage glimpsed beneath the soil. That whole structure disappeared during levelling in the late 1970s, leaving only a faint trace of its perimeter. The forgotten shape suggests people lived, worked or concealed themselves there before the land was taken for another purpose.
Levelled in the late 1970s. An earlier report (OPW 1974) described a raised circular area (int. diam. c. 38m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide, deep fosse. Break in bank at NE with accompanying causeway represented original entrance. At that time, possible traces of a Man-made underground passage were noticed within the internal area (CV031-002002-). The outline of the perimeter of the rath may still be traced, albeit with difficulty.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

A fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Aghaconny is a likely early-medieval defensive or ritual site, characterised by a circular enclosure with a bank and fosse. Though levelled in the late 1970s, it was historically associated with local folklore surrounding fairies, as its name suggests, and may have been a place of cultural or spiritual significance in prehistoric times.
