Indicated is a crannog in County Mayo, Ireland. The name offers no further detail, but a crannog is a built island, often wooden, raised above water to keep out rain, rot and unwanted visitors. It may have held a household, a workshop or a place of refuge. The lake would have carried sound to it, and the people there would have known when the world came near.
