Excavation is a failed search for two vanished pits in Ballybannon, County Carlow, where only post-medieval ditches remained visible when the road was built. The distinction between a missing thing and a proven absence gives the site its edge.

Test excavations in advance of construction of the N9/N10 Kilcullen-Waterford Road uncovered two pits and a number of possible field boundaries/drainage ditches. (Hughs J. 2008, 27). Full excavation (Excavation Licence number E2611) failed to locate the pits. The linear features were of post-medieval date. (O' Connell, T. 2009, 4) References: Hughs J.
