What is recorded here

Indicated is an overgrown circular island in Cloonfinnan Lough, County Leitrim, still ringed by timber uprights and wattle bedding. A quernstone lies inside the island, suggesting people once ground grain beside the water. The lake stretches nearly seven hundred metres, yet this small mound remains the clearest mark of human presence at its southern end.

Located at the S end of Cloonfinnan Lough, a subrectangular lake (max. dims c. 700m NNW-SSE; c. 400m ENE-WSW) represented as slightly larger (max. dims c. 770m NNW-SSE; c. 425m ENE-WSW) on the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map. This is an overgrown circular island (diam. 33m; H 1.75m) surrounded in the water by lines of timber uprights and wattle bedding which are best preserved W-NNE. There is a quernstone in the interior.
