Enclosure in Ballinvinny North

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Ballinvinny North once held six lioses, but Plough and pride erased all but two. The surviving circular enclosure stands ten metres wide on a north-facing ridge, witnessing the disappearance of its neighbours rather than resisting it.
In pasture, atop ridge on N-facing slope. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular enclosure (diam. c. 10m). Levelled; no visible surface trace. According to Power (1923, 176) 'The O.M. records no fewer than six lioses; but all of these, with two exceptions....have disappeared'. Circular enclosure (CO064-006---) c. 200m to NE. Levelled ringfort (CO064-008---) c. 220m to SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
