Emlagh is a lost island in a red bog, marked on a 1656 map with a causeway stretching north-west toward Gravelstown. That line is probably the road now, carrying drivers past the buried monastery and parish church without a thought for the depth below. The bog kept the island clean while the world rebuilt itself around the path, turning a sacred crossing into an ordinary journey.

The site of the early monastery and the site of the parish church of Emlagh is situated on the S side of what was once an island in Emlagh bog. The island in the Red moor of Emlogh is marked on the Down Survey (1656-8) barony map of Kells with a causeway extending NW towards Cravelltonne (Gravelstown), which is probably now occupied by the road.
