Islandbridge hosted the first Liffey weir, working for the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem at Kilmainham until the dissolution. It had four hachis or traps for catching salmon, probably occupying the site of the present weir. The structure remained in use until the 18th century, marking a long period when the river gave up its silver catch through human ingenuity rather than chance.

According to Went (1954, 45) the first weir on the river Liffey was in the neighbourhood of Islandbridge. The Hospital of St John of Jerusalem at Kilmainham had the salmon weir until the dissolution when it was described as having four hachis or traps for catching salmon (op cit, 57). This was probably on the site of the present weir at Islandbridge, which was in use until the 18th century.
