Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Drumdartan Glebe

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Drumdartan Glebe, County Leitrim: an earthen ringfort on a west-facing hill slope, with a wide fosse and outer bank. Its true entrance has vanished under grass and time, though a modern gap marks the north. The measurements are clear; the life inside is not. Perhaps people kept sheep, children, or secrets there before the field bank clipped the south.
Situated on the gentle W-facing slope of a broad hill. This is an overgrown circular area (diam. 39m E-W; 37m N-S; int. diam. 34.5m E-W; 32.5m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5-5.5m; int. H 0.6-1.2m; ext. H 1.8m at N to 2.2m at W) separated by a fosse (Wth of top 7-10.5m; Wth of base 4-5.5m; D 1-1.2m) S-N and NE-SE from an outer bank (Wth 2-4m; H 0.5m) SW-N. The original entrance is not identified although there is a modern entrance at N, and the fosse is clipped by a field bank at S. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008
