What is recorded here

Seventeen metres of drystone chamber hide beneath the northwest quadrant of a Galway rath, forcing entry through narrow creeps and dog-leg turns. A modern breach exposes the first passage, but the second and third still demand crawling past a buried boulder before they open into darker space. The stones remain sharp and dry after centuries, waiting for someone brave enough to map what the earth already knows.

In the NW quadrant of a rath (GA114-070----). This complex well-preserved drystone-built Man-made underground passage (L >17.4m) consists of three/four passages connected by two creeps. The 1st passage (L 3m; Wth 1.4m) runs SSE-NNW; access to it is gained via a modern breach at the SSE end. A creep (L 0.7m; Wth 0.6m), now blocked, at the N end of the W side-wall leads to the 2nd passage (L 4.5m; Wth 1.15m; H 1.8m), which also runs SSE-NNW. Access to it is now gained through a breach at the N end of the creep. A slightly dog-legged creep (L 1m; Wth 0.6m) at the N end of the E side-wall of this passage leads to the 3rd passage (L 5.2m; Wth 1.35m), which runs ENE-WSW. A large natural boulder is incorporated into the NE end of the N side-wall of this passage. Beyond the boulder another possible passage (L 3m; Wth 0.8m) runs northwards into/under the bank of the rath. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 11 December 2017
