What is recorded here
Clear in Dromacummer East, the earthwork is a D-shaped oval 62m long beside the River Maigue. It appeared circular in 1840, lost half its shape before 1897, and still shadows the pasture through cropmarks and satellite images. The field boundary cut through it after 1700, reducing an ancient fort to a broken arc while the river kept the place alive.
In reclaimed pasture 40m W of the River Maigue and 80m NW of a watercourse that marks the townland boundary with Knockfenora. Fording point over the River Maigue 125m to the N. Depicted on the 1840 OS 6-inch map as a raised circular-shaped area (diam. c. 60m). The 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map shows the partially level monument as a raised semi-shaped area (dims. c. 65m N-S; 55m E-W) defined by a scarp truncated from E-S-SSW by a post-1700 field boundary running N-S and at S by a field boundary running NW-SE. The monument is visible as a roughly oval-shaped area (dims. c. 62m NE-SW; 47m NW-SE) defined by a fosse, intersected at NE by a field boundary running NE-SW on OSi orthophoto taken 2005-2012. Outline of monument clearly visible on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-13. Outline of monument visible as a D-shaped cropmark on Google Earth orthoimage dated 20/09/2020. Recorded in the Ordnance Survey Field Name Books as one of '2 ancient forts, one in the S. and another [LI039-057----] about the central part of the townland' (OSNB Bruree Parish).
