Helen's Tower rises above the Clandeboye Estate in County Down, a Scottish Baronial lookout built between 1848 and 1861 for Helen, mother of the fifth Lord Dufferin. She was alive when the outside work finished, so the tower celebrated her rather than mourning her. Dufferin filled its upper room with poems, treating height and memory as one instrument.
