Enclosure in Doorath

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Enclosure in Doorath has vanished beneath the woods above BallyKeeffe Hill quarry, leaving behind only Johnnie Murphy’s claim that fairy fiddles still played there. The hill may have swallowed the rath, or the rath may have withdrawn into the hill, which is why the land resists picture and measurement. What remains is a place that refuses to be taken, preserving itself through the loss of its own shape.
According to O'Kelly (1969, 8) the rath of Doorath was located, 'on the now wooded hillpoint at 550' overlooking BallyKeeffe Hill quarry, where Johnnie Murphy maintained he used to hear the fairy fiddle music'. The enclosure is not visible on satellite imagery (Digitalglobe and Google Earth, viewed 26 May 2021) in the area N of Ballykeefe Wood. The precise location of the enclosure is unknown.
