Excavation

On an undulating plain in pasture. Excavated in 2007 in advance of the N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford road improvement scheme (Licence no. E3537). A series of 8 circular pits (diam. c. 1m; D 0.25m) in no definite pattern, a post-hole and two possible stake-holes. Four of the pits and the post-hole contained sherds of middle Neolithic pottery. The pits may have been refuse pits for domestic waste. The pottery represented at least 3 globular bowls and distinctive sherds from one vessel came from the fills of two different pits and the post-hole. A sample of ash charcoal from one pit yielded a radiocarbon date of 3651-3526 cal BC (UBA-12203).
