Fulacht fia in Curraheen (cork By., Inishkenny Par.)

This fulacht fia was discovered during archaeological monitoring in advance of the construction of the N22 Ballincollig Bypass and was excavated in 2002. It consisted of a rectangular trough (1.8m x 1.22m; D 0.34m) filled with heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil and containing fragments of wood in its base. To the N of the trough an oval pit (0.71m x 0.5m; D 0.18m) filled with heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was found. A circular pit (diam. 0.52m; D 0.19m) with traces of oxidation on its N edge occurred to the S of the trough. Excavation also revealed a linear feature (7.4m NE-SW; max. 0.52m NW-SE; D 0.19m) cut into the natural clay and filled with heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil and an oval deposit (0.34m x 0.25m; D 0.02m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil to the W of it. This is one of a group of six fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds (CO073-137----, CO073-139----, CO073-140----, CO073-141----, CO073-143----) which were excavated here, the closest of which is a fulacht fia (CO073-141----) c. 30m to the W.
