What is recorded here

No amount of digging has ever revealed the passage, though local memory insists it runs beneath the Crossmoyle mound. People likely built or forgot it, yet the earth keeps its secret from every tool and footprint. The absence becomes the shape: a hole so deep it disappears into legend.

Wakeman (1875, 328) recorded a local tradition of an underground passage or possible Man-made underground passage at the motte and bailey (MO011-008001-) and there are folk references to one recorded in the schools manuscripts (IFC, School's MSS 946, 248-9; 947, 104; 956, 286-7: https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes), but no physical evidence of one has ever been encountered.
