Inscribed stone in Crossmoyle, County Monaghan, Ireland, is a small graveyard marker: 0.4m wide and 0.28m high, with 1696 carved proud on the stone and set into the inner face of the wall. It may have marked a house, a road, a claim or a life, but the date still stands out like a knife-cut in time. The dead kept that year longer than the living did.
