Cross-slab in Gallen

Fagmentary remains of a sandstone cross-slab (dims. 0.34m x 0.32m x 0.05m) which was unearthed during excavations of Gallen priory in 1935. Described by Macalister as a cross-slab which was located in an outhtouse beside the gate lodge and had been`broken into fragments, of which seven survive' and was decorated with`a plain equilateral cross' (Macalister 1949, 74). The remains of the slab had an inscription which reads LEC COEMGUSA that can be translated to read 'Stone of Coemgusa ' (Macalister 1949, 74) Macalister, R.A.S. 1949, 74, Plate XXXV drawing minor reference Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien.
