Cross-slab in Fuerty

Two sandstone cross-slabs are displayed on the tower of the roofless Church of Ireland church, and another (RO039-063009-) lies in the graveyard (RO039-063002-) (Wakeman 1890-1, 357-8; Crawford 1913, 160; Macalister 1945, vol. 2, 14,15; Herity et al. 1997, 117-8). This slab (dims 0.95m x 0.7m) has an incised two-lined ringed cross, a fish and the inscription 'or ar anmainaidacain'. Dateable to the early medieval period, likely 9th to 12th century AD, the cross-slabs may have served as Christian grave markers or waymarkers, reflecting the spread of Christianity in the region. Their presence in a church setting suggests a connection to local religious practice or ecclesiastical authority.
