Gateway serving Coxtown House (see 40909913), comprising a central pair of ashlar sandstone gate piers (on square-plan) having inset recessed panels, chamfered moulded plinths and with moulded pyramidal ashlar capstones; and with a pair of cast-iron gates having spear finials, intricate pierced cast-iron finials to base, and with cast-iron anthemion finials to central join. Gateway flanked to either side by curved sections of cast-iron railings set on ashlar plinth walls having spear finials over, and with cast-iron posts at intervals along length having acorn finials over. Located adjacent to road at the start of long curving approach avenue to Coxtown House. Attendant gate lodge (see 40909931) adjacent to the north-east.
This elegantly-appointed sweeping gateway makes a suitable fine first impression at the main entrance to Coxtown House (see 40909913). The finely-carved and well-detailed ashlar gate piers exhibited craftsmanship of the highest quality, and are among the best examples of their type in south Donegal. These piers having a classical architectural character that compliments the style of the main house itself to the west. The intricate cast-iron gates and railings survive in good condition and are notable examples of high-quality mid nineteenth-century mass-produced metallurgy. This gateway forms a pair of related structures along with the attendant gate lodge (see 40909931), and part of a wider group of structures associated with Coxtown House, and is an integral element of the built heritage of the local area in its own rights.
