What is recorded here

Corstown held a castle and settlement marks now buried beneath reclaimed farmland. The earthwork vanished from satellite views, leaving only a faint fosse to hint at its boundary. What was built there, who lived there, and when it disappeared remain unknown.

Earthworks, possibly indicative of settlement, were identified on an aerial photograph (GSI S478, 1973-77) and may be associated with the unlocated castle (KK018-085----) in the townland which is indicated on the Down Survey (1955-6). Satellite imagery (Google Earth and DigitalGlobe, viewed 6 July 2020) indicates that the field has been reclaimed and the earthworks are not evident. However, a fosse, perhaps delimiting the SW angle of the possible settlement, is visible. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 6 July 2020
