Platform

Originally recorded as in excess of seventeen pieces of brushwood (diam. 0.03-0.06m), mostly longitudinals, with inclusions of twigs (av. diam. 0.05m) and pieces of bark (exposed L 4.8m; Wth 2.8m; T 0.2m), exposed at the top of a WSW drain face. One split piece of brushwood displayed a possible toolmark. Probable pegs extended at an approximately 45º angle into the bog at N and S (Dunne 1999, 53, 99BG0015A). Excavation in 2001-2 revealed that the platform was composed of two layers; the upper layer consisted of longitudinal roundwood (diam. 0.06-0.10m) with brushwood (diam. 0.03-0.06m) and twigs placed in between the roundwoods; pegs were also noted. The lower layer was insubstantial and consisted of transverses and pegs. The remains yielded an Iron Age date of 163 BC-AD 21 (Whitaker 2009, 47).
