Irish tradition calls the place Tech Duinn, the house of Donn, and calls that piercing opening an entrance for the dead. The sea took the earlier iron light nearby, trapped its keepers on rock for two weeks, and forced a stronger building onto this unusual stone. Even automated now, the lighthouse still turns above a chamber where human warning and ancient belief occupy the same address.
