Macroom Castle is a broken ring of stones where the River Sullane cuts through County Cork, holding the gatehouse and tower that survived the loss of Muskerry. The MacCarthys lived inside this fortress until Donogh MacCarthy lost it in 1691, but Robert Hedges Eyre rebuilt much of the visible structure before 1824. Schools and shops now occupy the former castle grounds, turning a martial residence into an ordinary town centre while the old tower still watches the water.
